How Super/Windows works:

Below is an example of a program typical to most iSeries environments: Customer Master Maintenance.  It has three fields enabled for Super/Windows, indicated in pink.

The Industry field has a ? entered, which will cause the windows driver program to display a selection window because the value entered is not a valid entry.  The F4 key can also be used to cause the selection window to be shown.

The user can page through the available codes or can reset the display to be in alphabetical order by keying the starting characters in the field provided.  If authorized, the user can add a new code to the code file using F6. 

Selection is made by either keying the line number or by moving the cursor down to the line desired and pressing Enter.  The key value and description (and optional additional fields) are then returned to the calling program for programmed use.

Implementation:

Super/Windows is quickly implemented with a program that a programmer uses to identify the file that is to be accessed, key field(s) and the descriptive field that is to be shown to the user.  Input is edited against the file’s attributes and fields.

Below is the detail screen used to create the key program to display the Industry Code in the supplied code master file:

The program generates the source and program that is used to build the window data.  Each “key program” can be modified to return additional fields from the data file to the calling program.

Program Modifications:

Only a few modifications to existing source code are needed to activate Super/Windows.  Two copy statements are added for definition and subroutine or paragraph inclusion, and eight lines for each field that Super/Windows is to be active.  Lots of examples are included.  

With a little practice, it takes less than 10 minutes to enable four or five fields for each program. 

No changes are needed for the display file.  It can, however, be enhanced by using the returned description or to enable the use of the F4 key. 

Super/Windows is particularly useful in CL programs that are used to retrieve selection criteria for use in configuring an OPNQRYF statement and generating a report.  A sample of this function is included with the delivered software.
